A great white shark. Reference was taken from five photos found online. Textures done in Photoshop from scratch. This model contains only 100 vertices.
Texture mapping is a method for adding detail, surface texture, or colour to a computer-generated graphic or 3D model. A texture map is applied (mapped) to the surface of a shape, or polygon. This process is akin to applying patterned paper to a plain white box.
Before 3D models can be textured, they must be UV mapped. UV mapping is a 3D modeling process of making a 2D image representing a 3D model. The map transforms the 3D object onto an image known as a texture. In contrast to “X”, “Y” and “Z”, which are the coordinates for the original 3D object in the modeling space, “U” and “V” are the coordinates of the transformed object. This creates the effect of painting the image onto the surface of the 3D object.

A 3D model developed from scratch in 3D Studio Max. Textures were also made from scratch in Photoshop.
A futuristic sniper rifle created in 3D Max 8. Textures were created from scratch in Photoshop CS2. A UV map was created within 3D Max and high resolution texture was exported from Photoshop and applied to the model.
